The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team took down the Final Four host Waterloo Warriors 3-1 (25-18, 11-25, 25-13, 25-23) to advance to the OUA championship final on Friday (Mar. 8) night. The Blues will play either Ryerson or Western for the gold medal tomorrow (Mar. 9) night at 6 p.m.
CHAMPIONSHIPS BOUND: The team also earned a berth into the U SPORTS championship, March 15-17, in Edmonton.
TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year outside hitter Alina Dormann posted a game-high 24 points on 20 kills, three blocks and an ace. She also added a team-high 14 digs in the match.
Fifth-year veteran Anna Feore tallied 14 kills, 1.5 blocks, an ace, and 10 digs to balance her stat line, while first-year setter Hayley Goodwin put up a game-high 39 assists in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues jumped out to an 8-2 run to start the match. They used that to head into the first technical timeout up 16-8. Toronto held off Waterloo the rest of the way capturing the first set 25-18.
Waterloo responded going up 16-7 at the technical timeout. From there the Warriors outscored the Blues 9-4 to take the set 25-11.
Toronto rebounded in the third set, pulling away with a 16-10 advantage at the technical timeout. The Blues rallied off an 8-1 run, which led to a 25-13 set victory.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth, but Toronto led 16-15 at the technical timeout. With the score 24-23 for U of T, Dormann slammed the kill to push the team to the finals.
