Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

BLUES COME UP SHORT, MUSTANGS FORCE GAME 3

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 3-1 to the Western Mustangs in Game 2 on Friday night at Varsity Arena.

QUICK TURNAROUND: The Blues will hit the road early Saturday morning (Mar. 2) to play a do-or-die Game 3 in London, Ont. Puck drop is set for 2:30 p.m. All the action can be streamed on OUA.tv.

THE SKINNY: Toronto is one victory away from their first McCaw Cup final since 2007-08 and a berth into the U SPORTS national championship in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The first goal did not happen until late in the second. Western's Emma Suitor broke into the zone and used Toronto's defenceman Julia Szulewska as a screen to break the deadlock at 13:48. The Mustangs went into the second intermission up 1-0.

The visiting team doubled their lead early in the third. Rachel Armstrong pushed one by Toronto's goalie Erica Fryer just two and a half minutes in. Teammate Evra Levesque converted on a breakaway with seven minutes left to give Western the 3-0 advantage. Toronto's Jessica Robichaud scored late in the third, but the Blues would not get any closer.

Fryer made 14 saves for the Blues in a losing effort.
