Fifth-year defenceman Julia Szulewska scored with 6:46 remaining to help the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeat the Western Mustangs 2-1 in Game 3 of their OUA semifinal series on Saturday afternoon in London, Ont.
GOING TO THE SHIP: With the win, the Blues advance to their first McCaw Cup final since 2007-08 and earn a berth into the 2019 U SPORTS national championship, March 14-17, in P.E.I. Toronto will travel to Guelph, Ont., to battle the Gryphons, who swept their semifinal series with Ryerson, in a one-game championship final next Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Fourth-year forward Jessica Robichaud opened the scoring midway through the second period, picking up a loose puck in the high slot and shooting it through traffic to find the back of the net.
The Mustangs responded though as Sydnee Baker scored on the powerplay towards the end of the second period. The two teams were knotted at 1-1 after 40 minutes.
Szulewska proved to be the hero, firing a wide-angled shot into the far corner of the net to seal the victory.
First-year netminder Erica Fryer was spectacular on the day, making 22 saves in the victory. Â
