The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team scored five unanswered goals to capture a 6-2 victory over the York Lions on Saturday (Feb. 9) afternoon at Varsity Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The visitors got on the board first. York created a 2-on-1 and it ended with Natalie Dean going high blocker at 15:37 into the first. Toronto trailed 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes.
U of T responded quickly out of the break. Kassie Roache converted the wrap around to even the score only 36 seconds into the frame. It marked the fifth-year forward's team-high 13th goal of the season. Only 34 seconds later though, York's Erin Locke batted in her own rebound to give them the 2-1 advantage.
Toronto came into the contest with the top ranked power play in province. It continued the trend thanks to Mathilde De Serres finding the back of the net at 16:56. In the final seconds, Lauren Straatman hit a streaking Cristine Chao for the go ahead marker with only a single second left in the period. U of T was up 3-2 heading into the third.
The Blues did not look back the rest of the way. Stephanie Ayres forced a turnover in the offensive zone and fired in her 6th of the season at 4:16. Kiyono Cox added one almost four minutes later, while M. De Serres scored an empty netter just after the midway mark for her third point on the afternoon.
First-year goalie Erica Fryer made 15 saves to pick up her 10th victory of the season. Â
UP NEXT: The Blues are back in action on Friday (Feb. 15) night, when they travel to battle the Waterloo Warriors. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., at the Columbia Ice Fields.
