The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team shut out the Western Mustangs, 3-0, in Game 1 of their best-of-three OUA semifinal series on Wednesday night (Feb. 27) in London, Ont.
COMING HOME: The Blues will look for the series sweep as Game 2 is set for Friday night (March 1) at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale
here. Game 3, if necessary, is back in London on Saturday (March 2) at 2:30 p.m.Â
THE SKINNY: With the win, the Blues are one victory away from their first McCaw Cup final since 2007-08 and a berth into the U SPORTS national championship in P.E.I.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After two scoreless periods, fourth-year veteran Kiyono Cox picked up a loose puck just outside the Toronto zone, skated the length of the ice and made a nifty move to beat Mustangs goalie Carmen Lasis.
Â
Toronto padded their lead 10 minutes later as Mathilde De Serres tipped in a Julia Szulewska point shot on the powerplay. Rookie Taylor Trussler added an empty-net goal with 45 seconds remaining.
First-year netminder Erica Fryer stopped all 27 shots she faced in her first career post-season shut out victory.
