The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's track and field teams notched nine more podium finishes as the 2019 OUA championships wrapped up on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 23) at York University.
TEAM STANDINGS: Toronto's men finished as the overall team silver medalists, marking their best result at the OUA championships since 1994-95. The Blues finished with 122 points, behind only the Guelph Gryphons (161) and ahead of the bronze-medalist Western Mustangs (117.5).
The Blues women claim the overall bronze medal with 115 points, behind the Guelph Gryphons (218) and Western Mustangs (135).
MEN'S RESULTS: Second-year standout Peter Collier won the grueling men's heptathlon gold medal with 4,956 points. Collier finished first in the 60m (6.96), long jump (7.03m) and high jump (1.83m), second in the 60m hurdles (8.58) and pole vault (3.70m), third in the 1000m (2:55.26) and fifth in the shot put (10.20m). Philippe Johns placed fourth with 4,183 points.
Rookie standout Femi Akinduro made his mark at his first OUA championships, winning the gold medal in the triple jump with a jump of 14.56m.
Third-year veteran Jack Berkshire claimed the men's 600m silver medal in 1:19.91, while fourth-year standout Craig Klomp earned the silver medal in the men's 1500m in 3:51.73. Ben Devito (3:56.02) and Jake Carroll (3:57.28) were seventh and ninth, respectively.Â
Alex Augimeri, Alex Lau, Adam Paslawski and Cade Wykes earned the silver medal in the 4x200 relay, crossing the finish line in 1:28.57, while Daniel Wilson, AJ Bimm, Augimeri and Berkshire placed fourth in the 4x400 relay in 3:19.35.
In a thrilling men's 60m dash final, Lau placed fourth overall in 6.86 seconds, just 0.02 seconds off of the gold medalists. Collier finished seventh in 6.97 seconds.
Third-year veteran James Elson finished fourth in the men's high jump, clearing 1.89m. After winning the men's weight throw on Day 1, Ezana Debalkew placed fifth overall in the shot put with a throw of 14.10m. Julian Romano was seventh with a throw of 13.18m.
WOMEN'S RESULTS: After earning silver and bronze in the last two seasons, fifth-year veteran Laura Amoi won her first career OUA triple jump gold medal with a jump of 12.20m. Brenna Hamel (11.80m) and Saga Sjoberg (11.48m) were fourth and sixth, respectively.
Emily Branderhorst medaled in the women's high jump for the second straight season, claiming the OUA silver medal with a jump of 1.64m. Hannah Rolfe placed fifth, clearing 1.61m.
Bella Efremenko, Lucia Stafford, Avery Garrett-Patterson and Katrina Innanen earn the silver medal in the women's 4x400 relay in 3:48.90, while Innanen, Lindsay Brandys, Anesi Anyia and Bryn Walsh placed third in the 4x200 relay in 1:41.28.
Lucia Stafford (1:30.97) and Avery Garrett-Patterson (1:34.44) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the women's 600m, while Jazz Shukla placed fourth in the 1500m in 4:34.17. Somerset Jarvis was eighth in 4:43.66.
Anesi Anyia placed sixth overall in the women's 60m dash in 7.86 seconds.
