BLUES HEAD INTO PLAYOFFS ON A HIGH NOTE

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's volleyball team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-21) on Saturday night (Feb. 23) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: The Blues finished the regular season in third place in the OUA East division and will travel to take on the Western Mustangs in the OUA quarter-final match next Saturday.

TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year outside hitter Chris Towe recorded a team-high 13 points off of 13 kills and also added a team-high 10 digs.

First-year right side hitter Evan Falardeau registered 12 points with 10 kills and two aces, while getting eight digs as well. Third-year setter Jordan Figueira had a game-high 36 assists and chipped in with seven kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED: It was a back-and-forth affair to start off the match, with Toronto having the slit 16-14 edge at the first technical timeout. They were able to hold off the Lakers to capture the opening set 25-20.

In the second set, the Blues jumped out to a 6-1 advantage. They rode that early run into the technical timeout, leading 16-10. Toronto held off a late push from Nipissing to win the set 25-21.

The pattern of close sets continued in the third, as the Blues were up only 16-14 at the technical timeout. Thanks to a balanced attack though, the home team pulled away to win set and the match.
