The No. 4 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team recorded their 11th straight victory with a 6-2 win over the Brock Badgers on Friday night (Nov. 29) in St. Catharines, Ont.
It's the first time since the 1981-82 season that the Blues have won 11 straight regular season games.
Second-year forward David Thomson and first-year defenceman Brendan Bornstein each scored one goal and added two assists on the night, while sophomore netminder Alex Bishop made 32 saves in his league-leading 12th victory of the season.
With the win, the Blues improve to 13-2-0 and sit atop the OUA West division.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Second-year forward Joey Manchurek opened the scoring midway through the first period. The native of Tecumseh, Ont., fired a wide-angled shot to beat Brock netminder Mario Cavaliere on the powerplay for his 10th goal of the season. U of T held a 1-0 advantage after 20 minutes of action.
An action-packed second period saw the Badgers take the lead as Cosimo Fontana scored 23 seconds into the frame and Adam Berg buried a rebound four minutes later.
The Blues responded though, scoring three unanswered goals just over six minutes apart. Rookie forward Oliver Benwell potted home a Manchurek rebound to even the game back up, before Kyle Potts one-timed a Hunter Atchison pass in close for the eventual game-winner.
Bornstein then took a long pass from Kyle Clarke and sent a booming shot over the glove of Cavaliere. Toronto was up 4-2 at the second intermission.
Nathan Hudgin finished off a nice 2-on-1 with Oliver Benwell early in the third period and Thomson rounded out the scoring by burying an Evan McEachern rebound on the powerplay with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
UP NEXT: The Blues wrap up the fall semester tomorrow (Nov. 30) when they host the Waterloo Warriors at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
