The No. 3 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team was shutout by the Waterloo Warriors 5-0 on Saturday afternoon (Nov 23) in Waterloo.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The OUA point's leader, Taytum Clairmont, opened up the scoring on the powerplay for the Warriors. Waterloo kept applying pressure and Krystin Lawrence would score to put Toronto down by two. Second-year goalie Erica Fryer made a couple big saves to keep the Blues deficit to two after the first period.
Â
The Blues had the opportunity to get back into the game during back-to-back powerplay opportunities in the second, but were unable to capitalize. The Warriors were then given a powerplay opportunity and Alison Hanson found the back of the net. Late in the frame, Brooklyn Cole buried the puck to give Waterloo a four lead after 40 minutes.
Â
The Varsity Blues continued applying pressure on Waterloo in the third but Warriors goalie Mikayla Schnarr kept the door closed to solidify a shutout victory.
Â
Fryer made 28 saves in the losing effort.
Â
UP NEXT: The Blues are back at Varsity Arena next Saturday (Nov 30) for a rematch against the Waterloo Warriors at 3:00 pm.
