The No. 3 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team took sole possession of first place with a 2-0 victory over the No. 8 York Lions on Thursday night (Nov. 21) at Varsity Arena.
The Blues are now 8-2-0 and sit in first place, three points ahead of the Nipissing Lakers, Ryerson Rams and York Lions.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues opened the scoring late in the first period as rookie forward Natasha Athanasakos found veteran defenceman Jana Headrick off the face off. Headrick fired a rocket from the point past Lions goalie Serena Vilde for her first goal of the season and the Blues took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
After a scoreless second period, which saw Blues netminder Erica Fryer make 11 saves, third-year defenceman Gabrielle De Serres added an insurance marker, Toronto's second powerplay goal of the game, with just over seven minutes remaining. The Ville Mont-Royal, Que., native received a pass from Cristine Chao and sent a booming shot from the point into the left corner of the net.
Fryer ended the night with 24 saves in her first shutout victory of the season.
UP NEXT: The Blues head to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Warriors this Saturday, November 23. The puck drops at 2:30 p.m.
