The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's water polo team heads to Ottawa for the 2019 National Collegiate Water Polo (NCWP) championship, November 15-17, hosted by the Carleton Ravens.
The Blues are once again the favourites to win the provincial title, having won the last six championship banners. Toronto went a perfect 10-0 in 2019 league play, outscoring opponents 163-26.
Toronto opens the championship versus the McGill Martlets on Friday night at 9:30 p.m., and wraps up pool play against the Carleton Ravens on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The medal matches are scheduled for Sunday, with the championship wrapping up with the gold-medal game at 2 p.m.
The Blues will rely on two-time reigning NCWP championship most valuable goalie Rachael Jaffe to lead the squad to victory again this season. Jaffe, who helped Team Canada to a fourth-place finish at the 2019 FISU Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy this past summer, has been a dominant force in net for U of T once again this season.
Offensively, rookie driver Lauren Dundee and second-year wing Alicia Vas have led the Blues, scoring 25 goals each over nine games. First-year right side Kaitlyn Palmer has also had a breakout rookie season, tallying 21 goals in nine games, while sophomores Sara Sutherland and Sarah Wentling each scored 15 goals this season.
*season stats are missing from Oct. 26 vs McMaster.
