Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

BLUES UPSET NO. 7 MUSTANGS, ADVANCE TO OUA FINAL AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Fourth-year goalkeeper Vanna Staggolis stopped Maddy Skinner on the final shot of penalty kicks to lead the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team to a 2-1 (3-2 PK) victory over the No. 7 Western Mustangs in OUA semifinal action on Friday night (Nov. 1) in Ottawa.

GOING TO THE 'SHIP: With the win, the Blues advance to tomorrow's OUA final, where they will face the York Lions, who upset the host and defending national champion Ottawa Gee-Gees in the other semifinal of the day.

U of T also earns their first-ever berth into a national tournament. Toronto has appeared in two U SPORTS national championship tournaments, but both as the host in 2009 and 2013.

FROM ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH ANGELO CAVALLUZZO: "We looked back at the history of the program and we wanted 2019 to be the team that changed the perception of the U of T women's soccer program.  The players deserve to be known for that and this is the motivation and catalyst for everything going forward."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The two teams played to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes and needed extra time before anyone could find the back of the net.

Western's Giulia Geraci opened the scoring in the 105th minute, just before the first half of extra time expired. That lead didn't last long though as 2019 OUA all-star Miranda Badovinac sent a shot on net and capitalized on her own rebound to even the score back up.

The match headed to a best-of-five penalty shootout. Toronto's Krizia Tarantino, Maddie MacKay and Alessia Cusimano all scored to put the Blues up 3-2 after three shooters. Staggolis then stepped up, denying Western's Skinner to seal the victory, 2-1.

Staggolis ended the match with eight saves through 120 minutes.

UP NEXT: Tomorrow's OUA final kicks off at 1:30 p.m. The match will be streamed live on OUA.tv.
