Joey Manchurek and David Thomson notched two points each as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team took down the No. 10 nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons, 3-2, in their 2019-20 home opener on Friday night (Oct. 4) at Varsity Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED: A second-year forward, Manchurek waste no time, burying a Thomson rebound just 19 seconds into the contest. The Blues were up 1-0 at the first intermission.
Fourth-year defenceman and Blues team captain Willy Paul put the home team up by two just 39 seconds into the second frame. The Burlington, Ont., native received a pass from Justin Brand and sent a booming shot through traffic for Toronto's first powerplay goal of the season.
The Gryphons responded, however, when Connor Bramwell tipped in a Ryan Da Silva point shot on the powerplay just over three minutes later. U of T held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of action.
With six minutes to go in regulation, Manchurek picked off a Gryphons breakout pass and found Thomson, who made no mistake in beating Gryphons netminder Andrew Masters.
The two-goal advantage didn't last long though as Cole Cameron's point shot went through traffic and in just two minutes later.
Second-year netminder Alex Bishop made 29 saves in the win.
UP NEXT: The Blues host the York Lions tomorrow night (Oct. 5) at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7 p.m.
