The University of Toronto men's swimming program is pleased to announce that world junior silver medalist Gabe Mastromatteo has signed a letter of intent and committed to swim for the Varsity Blues beginning in the 2020-21 season.
Mastromatteo, who earned the silver medal in the 50 breaststroke at the world junior championships in Budapest this past summer, is consistently one of the top in the world for his age.
"Gabe is a key recruit for the Blues as he is a fantastic talent and will be a threat for years to come," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. "And his ceiling is very high. He will be aiming to make the senior international teams for Canada. He has great technique and always rises to another level in the big races."
It is very unique that Mastromatteo has developed into a world class athlete is the small hamlet of Kenora. A lot of that has to do with the fact that his mom, Janet Hyslop, is his coach and she has a wealth of experience in the sport of swimming.
In the summer of 2018, Mastromatteo swam for Canada at the Junior Pan Pacific Rim championships and won the gold medal in the 100 breaststoke.
"I chose U of T because it is one of the top academic institutions in the world and that is a critical point for me and my family," said Mastromatteo. "The swim team has consistently produced international stars, like Kylie Masse, and I hope to be able to benefit from that legacy and add to it. I am happy that I will be able to continue my education and swim career in Canada, especially in Toronto, which is a city that I love."
Mastromatteo plans to enroll in Rotman Commerce program next fall.
Students who sign a letter of intent and/or commit to Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams will be eligible to play at the University of Toronto provided they are academically admissible and have applied through the normal process with the Ontario Universities Application Centre.
