Evan Shadkami had a career night, but the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team fell just short, dropping a 95-94 decision to the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday night (Jan. 19) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
TORONTO STATS: Shadkami tied his career-high with 33 points, while adding three rebounds and three assists. It marked the fourth time this season Shadkami dropped more than 20 points.
Fourth-year guard Christopher Barrett put up 19 points, four rebounds and four assists, while fourth-year wing Nikola Paradina added 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After the Voyageurs opened up the game on a 17-5 run, the Blues responded thanks to Shadkami. The Toronto native scored 14 points in the quarter to help cut the deficit to 26-21. Toronto maintained the momentum in the second, outscoring Laurentian 26-22 to head into halftime down 48-47.
The tight matchup continued in the second half. The visitors outscored Toronto 24-22 to go up 72-69 with only 10 minutes remaining. U of T kept the contest close with Laurentian in the fourth. They had a chance to win, down 95-94 with less than 10 seconds left, but the Blues were unable to nail the game-winner.
UP NEXT: The Blues hit the road to battle the No. 1 Carleton Ravens on Friday night (Jan. 25) in Ottawa. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
