Four different players scored as the Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 4-1 in U of T's first-ever Pride Night at Varsity Arena.
PRIDE NIGHT:Â There were multiple organizations at the event, such as the Canadian Olympic Committee's One Team, You Can Play, U of T Positive Space and LGBTOUT, to generate awareness, share educational pieces and promote programming and resources available in the community and on campus.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Rookie forward Avery Henry scored her first career goal late in the first period, sliding the puck through Briar Hughes' legs to give the home team a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Â
The Blues potted back-to-back goals 22 seconds apart midway through the second frame. First, veteran forward Meagan O'Brien finished off a nice pass from Taylor Trussler before Cristine Chao finished off a Kiyono Cox rebound. The Blues were up 3-0 at the second intermission.
Â
After UOIT's Blair Allison spoiled the shut out, fifth-year Blues forward Kassie Roache responded, scoring her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Â
Rookie goalie Erica Fryer posted 11 saves in her third straight victory.
UP NEXT: The Blues host the Queen's Gaels this Saturday, January 12 at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 3 p.m.
