The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's water polo team defeated the Carleton Ravens 8-2 and Queen's Gaels 5-2 on Day 2 of the Queen's Invitational on Sunday, November 4
The two wins complete a four-game sweep of NCWP teams over the two-day tournament. The Blues were without eight regulars, including three starters and five of the top eight, for the entire weekend but managed to find a way to win under extreme fatigue.
Rookie Sara Sutherland (Regina) had a huge weekend on offence leading all scorers in the tournament with thirteen goals. Third-year goalie Rachael Jaffe (Irvine, California) only gave up six goals in the four victories and posted a total of eight shut out quarters.
Toronto 8, Carleton 2
The Blues produced a largely listless effort in the opening quarter against the Ravens, scoring one goal as the teams traded single markers to enter the second quarter tied. For the next two quarters, the Blues defence shut out the Ravens, while the offence generated a pair of goals in each frame to put the Blues out in front 5-1 going into the final period. Another two-goal advantage and the Blues won 8-2. Sutherland led the way with four goals, junior Rhianna Wood (Calgary) notched a pair, while freshmen Allie Vas (Yorba Linda, California) and Sarah Wentling (Mohnton, Pennsylvania) added singles.
Toronto 5, Queen's 3
A tired Blues squad eked out a 1-0 first quarter lead. The teams then traded goals twice in the second quarter with the Gaels tying things up a couple of times, only to have the Blues score late to reclaim the one-goal advantage. Neither team could find the back of the net in the third quarter. Queen's then tied the game for a third time early in the fourth period. However, the Blues gutted out the final two minutes scoring once on the power play to go ahead 4-3 before adding an insurance marker with a minute left to escape with a narrow 5-3 victory. Wentling paced the attack with two goals including the winner. Wood, Sutherland and freshman Emily Grossman (Santa Clara, California) added single tallies.
Up next for the Blues is a trip in two weeks to the Carleton Invitational for four more games.
