The No. 4 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team fell 3-2 (24-26, 23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 9-15) to the Queen's Gaels on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 3) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year right side hitter Alina Dormann led all players with19.5 points off of 15 kills, 3.5 blocks and one ace, and had eight digs on the day.
Third-year outside hitter Brianna Patrick wasn't far behind, notching a career-high 18.5 points off of 13 kills, a game-high five service aces, while adding seven digs. Veteran middle Anna Licht added 10 points off of a game-high five blocks, four kills and one ace.
Sophomore setter Hayley Goodwin tallied 31 assists and 10 digs in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Toronto got off to a large lead in the first set, before Queen's clawed back. The Blues led 16-14 at the technical timeout but the team swapped leads for the rest of the set and Queen's came out on top, 26-24.
Queen's got out to an early 9-2 lead, eventually hitting the technical timeout up 16-9. The Blues went on a six-point run, narrowing the score to 24-23, but the Gaels closed it out to take the 2-0 match lead, 25-23.
The third set matched the intensity of the second. Blues veteran Anna Feore moved from libero to outside and Toronto took a 16-15 lead into the technical timeout. U of T went on a four-point run and took the third set, 25-22.
The Blues had a new spark in the fourth set, leading 16-9 at the technical timeout and went on to dominate, 25-12, to send the match to a fifth set. However, the Gaels led 8-6 at the switch, and went onto take it 15-9.
UP NEXT: Toronto's next matchup is tomorrow (Nov. 4) as they host the RMC Paladins at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Opening serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
