The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 3-1 to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night (Nov. 24) at Varsity Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â The Blues conceded the opening goal when Gryphons forward Molly Crossman shoveled a loose puck past first-year goalie Erica Fryer seven minutes into the game.
Â
In a penalty-filled first period, which saw seven total penalties, Toronto was able to even the score and capitalize on a late man advantage. Fifth-year forward Kassie Roache banged home her fifth goal of the season off a Cristine Chao rebound with 17 seconds remaining to tie up the game heading into the first intermission.
Fryer kept the game tied early in the second period as she sprawled across the crease to make a beautiful toe save. The Amherstburg, Ont., native continued her stellar game with 14 saves in the second frame to keep it knotted at 1-1 heading into the final period.
Midway through the third period Toronto took two penalties back-to-back, giving Guelph the 5-on-3 advantage. The Blues would kill off the two minutes, but could not hold back the Guelph attack as Miranda Lantz finished a two-on-one to give the Gryphons a 2-1 lead with six minutes to play. The Gryphons would add an empty-net goal by Lauren Ianni with four seconds left to seal the 3-1 win.
Fryer made 27 saves in the loss
UP NEXT:Â The Blues will be back in action after the December break as they take on the Winsdsor Lancers on the road on Saturday, January 5, 2019.
