The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night (Nov. 17) at Varsity Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues came out fast and aggressive, outshooting the Gryphons 11-2 to start the first; however, it was Guelph who struck first. Todd Winder turned over the puck in Toronto's zone and went low blocker side for the 1-0 lead. The visiting team added to their lead late in the first as Stephen Hiff found Matt Kenney in the slot with less than three minutes to go.
In the second period, Matt Campagna got the puck just outside the Blues zone and raced down the right side of the ice. The fourth-year forward cut back into the middle, danced around two Gryphons and finished it off in the bottom right corner. It was Campagna's first goal of the season at 7:58 to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Midway through the third period, Guelph took advantage of another chance. Captain Scott Simmonds tipped in Zach McFaddden's shot for the powerplay marker at 10:08 to regain the two-goal lead. The Blues responded on a powerplay of their own as Campagna sniped top corner for his second of the game with just over five and half minutes to go. Unfortunately, the Blues couldn't find the back of the net again.
First-year goalie Alex Bishop stopped 17 shots in the loss.
