BLUES DROP DECISION TO DEFENDING CHAMPS

The University of Toronto women's hockey team fell 5-3 to the OUA defending champion Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 27) at Varsity Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Mustangs opened the scoring just before the midway point of the first period thanks to a Renae Nevills point shot. April Clark found the back of the net at 12:02 and added her second of the game less than three minutes later to push Western's lead to 3-0. Toronto responded on the powerplay as rookie forward Taylor Trussler buried a Stephanie Ayres rebound for her first career goal with just over five minutes to go in the opening frame.

After a scoreless second period, Laura Straatman fed Kassie Roache a nice pass on a 2-on-1 and the fifth-year forward pulled a nice deke to cut the deficit to one in the opening minute of the third. Western came back just over two minutes later as Alyssa Chiarello and Brooke Dicicco scored within eight seconds of one another to lead 5-3. Laura Straatman tipped in a powerplay goal with just over nine minutes to go, but that was as close as they got.

First-year Blues netminder Erica Fryer made 12 saves in the loss.

UP NEXT: Toronto returns to action this Thursday, November 1 when they host the No. 10 Ryerson Rams in a school day game. Puck drop is set for 11:00 a.m., at Varsity Arena.
