The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team came out victorious over their cross-town rival Ryerson Rams with a 7-1 win on Thursday morning (Nov. 1) during their annual School Day game at Varsity Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â The Rams opened the scoring one minute into the game with a goal by Camryn Tait. The Blues responded quickly when rookie forward Taylor Trussler found the back of the net off a Julia Szulewska rebound to knot the game at 1-1. The Blues broke the tie just minutes later as Cristine Chao buried a loose puck to give the Blues a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.
Â
Trussler found the back of the net for her second of the game midway through the second period after beating a Ryerson defender down the ice. Meagan O'Brien scored less than a minute later for her first goal of the year to give the Blues a three-goal lead. The period finished on a high note as Toronto cushioned their lead with a rocket from Jessica Robichaud. U of T held a 5-1 lead going into the third period.
Trussler completed the hat trick after firing a shot from the high slot to give the Blues a 6-1 lead in the third. Lauren Straatman added the finishing goal on a wide-open net with less than two minutes to play. Second-year goalie Madeline Albert made 20 saves in the win.
UP NEXT: Toronto returns to action this Saturday, November 3 when they go on the road to face the York Lions. Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m., at Canlan Ice Sports.
