The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team scored three goals in the final four minutes, but fell 5-4 in overtime to the Concordia Stingers on Saturday night (Oct. 27) at Varsity Arena
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first marker didn't come until the second period. The Stingers forced a turnover in the Blues zone and it ended with Jean-Philippe Beaulieu hitting the back of the net 87 seconds into the frame. James Fletcher added to Concordia's lead as he came down the left side and sniped it past Blues goalie Frederic Foulem just after the midway point of the period. Toronto responded on a 2-on-1 as Ryan Kirkup fed Nathan Hudgin for the one-timer. The goal added to Hudgin's team-high eight points.
After U of T's captain Aiden Wallace was sent to the penalty box for tripping, Bradley Lalonde slid one by a diving Foulem with only 20 seconds left to regain the two goal cushion, 3-1, heading into the third period.
Alexandre Gosselin converted on a breakaway to add to push Concordia's lead to 4-1 four minutes into the third, but the Blues did not quit.
With just under four minutes remaining, rookie David Thomson sent a booming shot into the top corner to cut the deficit to two and they kept the pressure on. Wallace netted a beautiful powerplay goal from beside the net with just over 90 seconds remaining. The captain followed it up shortly after. With only 12 seconds left and the goalie pulled, Wallace recorded his second goal off a slap shot from the point to force overtime.
Hugo Roy spoiled the comeback for Toronto, scoring an unassisted marker just 49 seconds into the frame.
Second-year goalie Foulem made 22 in a losing effort.
UP NEXT: The Blues continue their five-game home stand next Friday night (Nov. 2) in the first of a weekend doubleheader against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., at Varsity Arena.
