Five different players scored as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team overcame a three-goal deficit to defeat the Windsor Lancers 5-3 in their 2018 home opener on Saturday night (Oct. 13) at Varsity Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Lancers wasted no time, getting out to a 2-0 lead as Alex Reiter and Lexi Contratto scored in the first 3:34 of the game. Windsor extended their lead to three with an Amy Maitre powerplay goal with 4:45 to go in the first period.
The Blues managed to get on the board before the first intermission as Stephanie Ayres banged in a cross-crease pass from rookie Taylor Trussler. Windsor was up 3-1 after 20 minutes.
The Blues evened the score with two goals four minutes apart in the second period. Lauren Straatman scored on a nice tic-tac-toe play on the powerplay, before fellow fifth-year forward Kassie Roache tipped in a Jana Headrick shot to tie it.
Toronto potted the go-ahead goal just 1:16 into the third period. Third-year forward Mathilde De Serres buried an Ayres point shot on the powerplay. Louie Bieman added an insurance marker as she received a pass from Roache all alone in front of the net and made no mistake.
Second-year Blues netminder Madeline Albert posted 18 saves in the victory.
UP NEXT: The Blues travel to North Bay, Ont., to take on the Nipissing Lakers next Saturday, October 20. Puck drop is set for 4:30 p.m.
