The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 4-3 in overtime on Saturday, October 13.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After Nick Chyzowski opened the scoring for the Warriors midway through the first period, the Blues evened the game back up as Max Lindsay finished off a tic-tac-toe play with Evan MacEachern and Willy Paul on the powerplay. The game was deadlocked at 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Paul put the Blues ahead halfway through the second frame with a beautiful goal off a cross-ice pass from Riley Bruce. The Blues led 2-1 at the second intermission.
First-year forward Joey Manchurek netted his first goal as a Varsity Blue, sending a booming shot into the top corner of the net right 5:49 into the third frame. The Warriors brought the game back within one with a powerplay goal midway through the third and forced overtime as Zac Coulter evened the score with one second in regulation.
Rookie forward David Thomson proved to be the game's hero, scoring his first goal in the Blue and White with 17 seconds remaining in overtime.
Second-year Blues netminder Frederic Foulem posted 27 saves in the win.
UP NEXT: The Blues travel to North Bay, Ont., next Friday, October 19 to take on the Nipissing Lakers. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
