The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team split their Sunday afternoon (Sept. 24) doubleheader with the visiting Guelph Gryphons, winning 8-7 before dropping their second game 2-6.
A strong pitching effort from veteran Graham Tebbit helped lift the Blues to an opening game victory. A Master's of exercise science student, Tebbit pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out six. Sparked on by Tebbit's performance on the mound, the Blues offence scored runs in four consecutive innings including a four run fourth. Second baseman Marco Bandiera led Toronto with three RBI, while right-fielder Sebastian Lech picked up two going 2-for-3 at the plate. Adam Odd, David Pham, Drew Valade, and Grant Shantz all appeared in relief of Tebbit, closing out a late Grypons comeback.
In a shortened second game, U of T was undone in the sixth and seventh innings as the Gryphons put up five runs over the two inning stretch. 2015 OUA all-star Bradley Bedford picked up the lone RBI for the Blues on a hard hit double. Left-fielder Michael Deluca also saw success at the plate going 2-for-3 on the evening.
The Varsity Blues will remain at Dan Lang Field for another week as they get set to welcome the Ryerson Rams for a Saturday, September 30 doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
