BLUES SWEEP LAURIER TO EXTEND WIN STREAK

Being home in Toronto always brings good vibes for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues fastpitch team, and Friday night (Sept. 22) was no exception. In front of a very engaged crowd at Dieppe Park, the Blue and White put on a great offensive show winning both contests with the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks, 11-8 and 8-0.

Game one had Taisley Isaac (3-2) back in the pitching circle, throwing a steady five innings, striking out five, before handing the ball to Alicia Callaghan for a clean two inning save. Leading the way offensively was Callaghan, with four hits, and a run batted in. Shortstop Mercedes Roddau also had three hits, and drove in three runs, with Rebecca Burt adding three hits. After playing some shaky defence, the Blues picked up the offence and scored 11 runs en route to the big 11-8 victory.

The 9 p.m. game started quickly in the top of the first inning. Jessica Tamayo walked, followed by an RBI single from Kylie O'Donnell, and another from Aliya Shafi to jump out 2-0. A big fourth inning saw five Blues cross the plate with RBI's from Nicole Knudsen, Shelby Reid, and Mercedes Roddau. Samantha Cotton pitched a very efficient five innings for her fourth win of the season, giving up just three base runners in the 8-0 victory.

The fastpitch team is now on a five game win streak, and has won 10 of their last 11 games. Currently sitting in third place in the OIWFA, the Varsity Blues await the arrival of the Windsor Lancers next week (Sept. 29) again at Dieppe Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
