FASTPITCH SUCCESSFUL ON OTTAWA ROAD TRIP

After a midweek sweep of the Brock Badgers, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues fastpitch team headed to Ottawa for doubleheaders with the Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens, winning three out of four contests.

Saturday saw Toronto open with the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees who entered the matchup with a 5-3 record.

Game one saw a quiet start on the offence for both teams, with Ottawa eventually taking a 2-0 lead through four innings after chipping a few balls through the infield for runs. After a rough fifth inning, Toronto trailed 5-0, but stormed back for three runs in the sixth to cut into the lead. Ottawa withstood and won 5-3, despite strong efforts from Alicia Callaghan and Aliya Shafi, who had two hits each.

The second game of the doubleheader saw Blues newcomer Samantha Cotton with the ball in the pitching circle, and she was strong over her five innings of work, striking out 4.

The offence was the real story though, as Toronto skipped out to a quick 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Blues stretched it out to 4-0 through two innings via an RBI triple from former Gee-Gee Michelle Miller, followed by an RBI single from Nicole Knudsen. The third inning saw Jessica Tamayo lead off with a hit and a stolen base, which resulted in a run as Ottawa threw the ball away.  Toronto would win by a final of 9-2 a tidy five innings.

The Blues then headed to Kars Recreation Centre to play the Carleton Ravens Sunday morning.

Carleton entered the contest 0-10 on the season.

Alicia Callaghan drew the start in the pitching circle for U of T. Michelle Miller again had a strong game at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in two. Knudsen drove in two more and shortstop Alika Kingsbury drove in three herself. All that made for a busy scoresheet in a big 12-4 victory.

Following the big win, Toronto looked to complete the sweep of the Ravens.

After a strong defensive start from Carleton, the score was only 2-1 through four innings. A strong fifth erased that though, with Toronto scoring five runs on four hits, giving the victory to Samantha Cotton to push her record to 3-0 on the season. Three more runs were scored by left fielder Miller, to go along with two from Roddau in the 8-1 win.

After a successful 3-1 weekend Toronto is now 8-2 on the season, sitting in third place in the OIWFA. The Blues welcome Laurier on Friday night (Sept. 22) to Dieppe Park at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.. Laurier currently sits at 4-4 on the season.
