ENERGY SPARKS COMEBACK WINS

Week 2 in the OIWFA began with Brock University traveling to Toronto and Dieppe Park Wednesday night (Sept. 13). With the Badgers sporting a 2-0 league record after winning a silver medal last season in the playoffs, this was always going to be tough night.

Game 1 began a little slow for Toronto, with some sloppy defence and some bad luck. Brock jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Shelby Reid led the way with a double and was driven in by Alicia Callaghan, who later scored as well. After adding a run in the third inning, Reid and Callaghan were at it again in the fifth, with both players getting hits and scoring on a two run double by Aliya Shafi.

The comeback was completed in the bottom of the sixth inning with Kylie O'Donnell driving in a pair with a double, pushing Toronto ahead 8-6. Annie Vlahiotis got her first start of the season in the pitching circle, giving up just three earned runs and pitching a complete game victory.

Game 2 saw more of the same, with Brock getting out ahead 1-0 in the first inning against starting pitcher Alicia Callaghan, who went four innings, giving up two earned runs, but left the game trailing 4-0.

The offence ignited in the fifth, with three singles in a row by Nicole Knudsen, O'Donnell and Reid, before a hit batter drove in a run, and a walk by Mercedes Roddau to cut the lead to 4-2.

In the sixth inning Michelle Miller led off with a double, followed by a Knudsen sacrifice fly, a walk from O'Donnell, a single from Reid, a single from new pitcher Taisley Isaac, and another by Shafi, and all tolled the Blues put up five runs in a huge comeback. The Badgers scored one in the bottom half, but Isaac picked up the victory, 7-5.

Varsity Blues fastpitch has now run their winning streak to five games as the squad heads to the nation's capital to play the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday and the Carleton Ravens on Sunday.
