The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 11-0 and 13-4 on Saturday, before narrowly falling 11-5 and 9-8 to the Brock Badgers on Sunday to open their 2017 regular season this past weekend (Sept. 9-10).

With an incredible pitching performance from Graham Tebbit which saw the veteran pitch five innings while striking out 12, the Varsity Blues delivered a shutout performance of the Warriors. Grant Shantz pitched in relief recording five strikouts in two innings of work. At the plate the Blues received a pair of four RBI performances from Bradley Bedford and Tanner Young-Schultz.

Toronto 13, Waterloo 4

Utilizing two five run innings, U of T's bats continued to shine in the doubleheader. Tanner Young-Schultz again delivered a four RBI afternoon, along with shortstop Gabriel Nakonechny. Six different Blues recorded an RBI in the win. Dean Christidis picked up the win on the mound pitching five innings of one run ball with six strikeouts. Matthew Chow appeared in relief.

Brock 11, Toronto 5

The Blues got out to a 4-2 lead after the second inning, but the Badgers took over from there, scoring three in both the fourth and seventh, and single runs in the third, fifth and eighth to round out the scoring.

Graham Tebbit led the Blues offensively, driving in two runs off a double in the first inning. Gabriel Nakonechny added two hits and scored twice in the loss.

Brock 9, Toronto 8

U of T got out to a great start and found themselves leading 7-2 after the top of the fifth inning. The Badgers responded though with six runs in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-7 advantage. The Blues evened the score with a single run in the sixth, but a walk-off single in the seventh sealed the victory for Brock.

Tebbit led the Blues with three RBI on two hits and scored two runs, while Nakonechny had three hits, scoring twice.

The Varsity Blues return to action this Sunday, September 17 as they travel to London, Ont., to take on the OUA defending champion Western Mustangs.
