NO. 2 BLUES COME BACK BIG VS NO. 10 MARAUDERS

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team kept their undefeated streak alive, overcoming a two set deficit to defeat the No. 10 McMaster Marauders 3-2 (13-25, 11-25, 25-19, 26-24, 15-7) on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
 
The win improves the Blues to 12-0 on the season as they remain atop the OUA East standings, while the Marauders fall to 10-3 and sit second in the West.
 
OUA leading point-getter and 2016 all-Canadian Alina Dormann led all players with 18 points on 14 kills, two aces and two blocks, while adding 19 digs on the day.
 
Third-year left side Anna Feore notched 12 kills and 17 digs, with rookie Emma Armstrong recording 11 kills and 16 digs. Sophomore middle Anna Licht chipped in with eight kills as well.
 
Fifth-year setter Madelyn Mandryk tallied 38 assists and a career-high 30 digs in the victory.
 
The Marauders got out to a hot start and built an early 12-4 advantage and led Toronto 16-7 at the first set technical timeout. McMaster continued to roll and a final ace from Maicee Sorensen sealed the 25-13 first-set victory.
 
The visitor's got out another lopsided start and took a 16-5 lead at the second set break. The Marauders built a 2-0 match lead with a 25-11 second set win and looked to have the Blues against the ropes.
 
Feore sparked Toronto in the third, getting the Blues out to a 7-2 lead. The Marauders rallied but Toronto held strong and took a 16-8 into the tech timeout. McMaster continued to chip away at U of T's lead but the Blues stayed alive with a 25-19 third set win.
 
Both teams traded points to start the fourth, tied 8-8 in the early goings. The Marauders began to pull away and were up 16-11 at the break. Toronto came alive and began to inch back into the game. The Blues gained momentum, ending on a 13-4 streak to force a fifth set, 26-24.
 
The fifth set started as a see-saw battle but the Blues went ahead and led 8-4 at the switch. Some great offence from Armstrong and a final kill from Feore sealed the come-from-behind victory, 15-7.
 
Fifth-year middle Alicia Jack led the Marauders with 16 points on nine kills, five aces and two blocks, while fourth-year outside hitter Joanna Jedrzejewska had 15 points on 13 kills and two blocks.
 
Carly Heath recorded a game-high 40 digs, with Caitlin Genovy tallying 39 assists in the loss.
 
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host the Brock Badgers at Goldring Centre. Opening serve is set for 2 p.m.
