Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team earned the season sweep of rival Queen's Gaels dropping the visiting team 85-77 in Toronto's final home game of the season Saturday evening (Feb. 4) at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
The Varsity Blues continue to sit in second place in the OUA East as their third consecutive win lifts them to 11-5 on the season.
The Friday matchup quickly turned into a night of milestones as fourth-year guard Reilly Reid tied his single game career-high in points yet again, scoring 22 for the second time in just one week.
As well, fifth-year forward Devin Johnson creeped ever closer to scoring his 1200th career point, now just one point shy after posting a game-high 29 in the victory.
Also of note, fifth-year Gaels guard Sukhpreet Singh also set a new record on the evening, becoming Queen's all-time leading scorer as his 21 points on the night lifted him to 1,319Â for his career, placing him eight points clear of the former record holder Mitch Leger (1,311).
With eight lead changes in the first half the night was filled with excitement beyond just the stats sheet.
A late run just before halftime and a good start to the third, the Varsity Blues were able to outpace the Gaels 46-33 in the two frames.
Queen's would battle back in the fourth, tying the game 74-74 thanks to the oustide shooting of Tanner Graham, however, a dagger three from the near 1200 point man Johnson and a Manny Sahota block on Singh in the final minute sealed the deal for the Varsity Blues.
U of T now ends their season on a tough three game road trip beginning next Friday, February 10 against the No. 5 Ryerson Rams. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. with the game being streamed live on OUA.tv.
