Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's volleyball team fell in three sets to the Western Mustangs Saturday night (Feb. 18) in London, Ont.
The Varsity Blues record now stands at 6-10 as they sit in fifth place in the OUA East.
Trailing at the first set break, U of T made a serious run late to challenge the Mustangs as their front line frustrated the Western attack with an impressive array of blocks. However, Western's lead would allow them to escape the first set threat with a 26-24 win.
From there the Varsity Blues found themselves battling from behind where they were unable to mount a run to change momentum dropping the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-20.
First-year outside hitter Alex Barnes showcased his explosiveness throughout delivering a team-high 12 points off of 11 kills and one service ace. Fellow first-year outside Nicholas Trewern was close behind with 9.5 points from nine kills and one assisted block while veteran middle Zia Karim led the first set block run scoring three solo bocks and one assisted block on the night.
Four Mustangs reached double-digit points in the victory with Bryn Ramsay scoring a game-high 15.5.
The Varsity Blues now return home to the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport where they will end the regular season next weekend against the Waterloo Warriors (Feb. 24) and Guelph Gryphons (Feb. 25). First serve for both matches is scheduled for 8 p.m.
