Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team fell 74-54 to the No. 3 Ottawa Gee-Gee's Friday evening (Feb. 17) in the nation's capital.
With the loss U of T drops to 11-7 on the season but remains in second place in the OUA East.
The Varsity Blues found themselves stifled by the Ottawa defence in the early goings being outscored 37-17 in the first half.
The Gee-Gee's focused their defensive efforts on U of T scoring leader Devin Johnson, overloading the paint on drives from the two-time all-star forcing the Blues to look elsewhere for momentum. Johnson would still contribute on the glass picking up nine rebounds along with his nine points on the night.
Second-year forward Daniel Johannson was afforded room down low with the focus on Johnson and delivered a team-high 11 points going 5-for-7 from the field while fourth-year guard Chase Ruttenberg provided a spark off the bench with his high-motor approach leading to nine points.
However, Toronto was unable to solve the Gee-Gee's quick passing attack which led to 20 assists and 13 made three-pointers for the nationally ranked contenders as five players reached double-digits in the victory.
The Varsity Blues will be in tough once again tomorrow night (Feb. 18) as they conclude the regular season against No. 1 Carleton Ravens in Ottawa, Ont. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m. with all the action being streamed live on OUA.tv.
