Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team dropped a tough four set match to the visiting No. 9 Ryerson Rams on Friday evening (Nov. 17) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
The loss marks the first OUA regular season loss for the Blues since February 7, 2015, when U of T dropped their regular season finale to the Ottawa Gee-Gee's in an exciting five set contest.
The intense in-town rivalry began with back-and-forth action, however, momentum was on the side of the Blue and White at the end of the first set as a 7-0 run. Four points in that run from perennial powerhouse Alina Dormann helped seal a first set win for Toronto.
The evenly matched contest continued into the second with U of T having an opportunity to go up two sets leading 24-23 late, but a run from the Rams shifted momentum in favour of the nationally ranked squad who stole the second 26-24.
From there, Toronto was unable to solve the Rams who turned several strong runs into a 25-20 third set win and 25-16 fourth set victory to seal the deal on the potential OUA playoff preview.
Dormann led all Blues on the night registering 15 points from 14 kills and one solo block, while left side Anna Feore was the only other Blue to hit double-digits posting 10 points on eight kills and two solo blocks.
Setter Angelica Hovanessian finished the night with a game-high 42 assists. Libero Sophia Currier notched a team-high 21 digs, defensively.
The Rams were paced by middle blocker Theanna Vernon who displayed a strong all-around game recording a game-high 20 points from 11 kills, five service aces, and four solo blocks. Setter Mady Timpany led Ryerson with 28 assists and veteran Julie Longman registered a game-high 28 digs.
The Blue and White return to action this Sunday, November 19 as they travel to Peterborough, Ont., to take on the Trent Excalibur. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the afternoon matchup.
