The Varsity Blues fastpitch team dropped two games to the Western Mustangs on Saturday, September 30 at Dieppe Park.
Friday night saw the Blues get rained out against the Windsor Lancers, as field conditions were unsafe. With the opportunity lost to play Windsor, Toronto looked forward to Saturday, and the seven-time defending OIWFA champion Western Mustangs.
Back at Dieppe Park, with a much better weather forecast and a dry field, Western rolled in, and started hot against Blues starter, Taisley Isaac. Isaac threw well, but Western found all the holes and took a commanding lead. Toronto couldn't get anything started against the strong pitching of Western and dropped Game 1 of the double header, 12-0.
Game 2 saw the Blue and White start a little better, getting ahead 1-0 against the Mustangs with a second-inning double from catcher Shawnee Rizqa, plating Aliya Shafi. Despite a few mini rallies later in the game, there was no stopping the Western offence, which cruised to an 8-1 victory.
These losses snap the five game winning streak fastpitch was on. Currently, the Varsity Blues sit in third place in the OIWFA, trailing Western and Ottawa. With a 10-4 record, Toronto welcomes Guelph and Ryerson for the final weekend of league play before the playoffs. This all gets started on Saturday afternoon at Dieppe Park, at 2:00pm.
