The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team won their fourth consecutive game, knocking off the UNB Varsity Reds 70-63 in non-conference preseason action Saturday night (Oct. 14) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
After a slow start which saw the Blue and White down 15-5, Toronto came storming back with an 11-0 run to end the first quarter up 16-15.
Action would continue to be tight with the hot-hand of UNB guard Javon Masters edging out the team-play of U of T, seeing a 34-33 Varsity Reds lead at halftime.
However, strong inside play from third-year forward Daniel Johansson, complimented by slashing guard play from fourth-year Sage Usher and fifth-year Reilly Reid, helped lift the Blues to a decisive third quarter performance. Outscoring the Reds 21-15 in the frame, the six-point gap would prove to be enough down the fourth quarter stretch.
Usher led all Blues on the night with 15 points, including several key free throws in the final minute. The Toronto native also added seven rebounds and four assists.Â
Johansson ended the evening with 12 points, while Reid and fifth-year veteran Chase Ruttenberg collected 11 and 10 to round out the double-digit scoring for U of T.
Masters led all players with a game-high 22 points, adding six rebounds, four assists, and one steal.
The Varsity Blues will now head to Montreal, Que., where they will face McGill, UQAM, and St. FX in a trio of exhibition contests to end their preseason next weekend (Oct. 20-22).Â
