FASTPITCH OFF TO OIWFA CHAMPIONSHIP

The Varsity Blues are heading to the OIWFA playoffs this weekend as the No. 3 seed, after a stellar 13-5 season. That .722 winning percentage is a club best in the regular season and the Blue and White are looking for a lengthy playoff run, beginning Saturday in Kitchener at the Peter Hallman Ball Yard (220 Hayward Ave. Kitchener, ON. N2C).

2017 marks a new format in the OIWFA, as the league has gone to a double knockout tournament for the playoffs. As the third seed, Toronto has drawn the No. 6 Ryerson Rams, in the first round of the playoff tournament.

The opening round matchup bodes well for the Blues, following a sweep of the Rams to close out the season last weekend, with scores of 7-4 and 9-7. Ryerson, in just their second season in the league, has improved greatly in year two, boasting a 10-10 record, and a +2 in run differential.

As the Varsity Blues enter the playoffs, they ride a 3-1 final weekend and a heavy offensive output. Ranking in as the fifth best offence in the country, Toronto has the power to hang with any team in the OIWFA. Carried by a crew of solid veterans, the fastpitch team is ready to score big and play good defence behind a proven pitching staff.

Awaiting the Blues should they beat Ryerson Saturday morning, is the winner of the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Queen's Gaels game, at 1:00pm. The first game of the day will be streamed online at http://sportscanada.tv/oiwfa/

This experienced Varsity Blues squad has the core group entering their fourth playoff run together. Saturday morning sees this group start their 100th game together and the staff is looking for this to be a special weekend with great results. As one of the favourites for the title, fastpitch has big expectations entering the championship weekend.
