STRONG SECOND HALF LIFTS BLUES OVER GRYPHONS

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team outscored the Guelph Gryphons 49-31 in the second half en route to a 77-66 victory on Friday night (Jan. 6) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
 
With the win, the Blues improve to 6-3 and remain in second place in the OUA East, while the Gryphons drop to 3-4 and sit second in the Central division.
 
Fifth-year forward Devin Johnson led all players with a double-double of 23 points and 10 boards, while second-year forward Daniel Johansson had 17 points on the night.
 
Third-year guard Sage Usher tallied 13 points, while Reilly Reid notched a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, and added three assists and two steals in the win.
 
A low-scoring first quarter saw Toronto build an 11-8 lead.  Guelph opened the second frame on a 12-2 streak and held a 35-28 advantage at halftime.
 
The Blues rallied and started the second half on a 10-2 run, with an Usher three regaining the U of T lead (38-37). Toronto continued to press and, highlighted by a Sahota dunk, outscored Guelph 25-9 in the third quarter to take a 53-44 lead heading into the final frame.
 
U of T continued to roll in the fourth and opened the game wide open with 10 consecutive points from Johnson.
     
Daniel Dooley led the Gryphons with 14 points in the loss.
 
The Varsity Blues are back in action tomorrow night as they host the Lakehead Thunderwolves at Goldring Centre. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale at varsityblues.ca/tickets.
