STRONG EFFORT FALLS JUST SHORT VERSUS LAKERS

Box Score Despite having three players register double-digit points, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's volleyball team fell 3-1 to the Nipissing Lakers Friday night (Jan. 20) on the road. Set scores were 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 13-25.

The Varsity Blues opened the Friday night showdown with an explosive offence as U of T jumped ahead one set early thanks to the strong play of veterans Will Collucci and Zia Karim, and first-year left-side Nicholas Trewern.

However, the Lakers would respond in the second set where they were able to carry momentum through for the four set victory.

Colucci led all Blues with 13.5 points on the night registering 10 kills, two service aces, and three block assists.

In the middle, Karim picked up nine kills, one blocked shot and two blocked assists for 13 points.

Trewern earned eight kills and two service aces from his left side in the four set matchup.

Lakers standout Steven Wood led all players on the night with 16.5 points utilizing 14 kills, one service ace and three block assists.

First-year U of T setter Jordan Figueira notched 27 assists while tying with second-year Zach Albert for the team lead in digs with eight.

The Varsity Blues now begin a four-game home stand next Friday, January 27 when they host the RMC Paladins at the Goldring Centre. First serve is set for 8 p.m.
