BLUES SPLIT WITH GEE-GEES, TOP RAVENS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fastpitch team went 1-1 versus the Ottawa Gee-Gees before notching two big wins over the Carleton Ravens this past weekend (Sept. 16-18) at Dieppe Park.

Friday night saw the Gee-Gees face third-year standout Taisley Isaac in the pitching circle. Isaac was sharp as usual, giving up just two earned runs over a complete game, five strikeout performance. Offensively, two doubles from left-fielder Shelby Reid, with runs batted in from former Gee-Gee, Michelle Miller, and shortstop Mercedes Roddau, plus three from Karen Nishi, led the Blues to a 7-6 win.

Game two was a different story, as U of T struggled defensively, behind the combined pitching duo of Alicia Callaghan and Annie Vlahiotis. Despite scoring seven runs Ottawa split the series with a 14-7 victory.

Sunday morning, Toronto faced off with a Carleton Ravens team who has struggled out of the gates, coming in 1-7 on the season. Game one saw Isaac in the circle once again, giving up just three hits in five innings, improving her record to 4-0 on the season. The offence was paced by leadoff hitter, Alika Kingsbury, who went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two runs, and third basemen, Kylie O'Donnell, who was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in an 8-0 win.

The Blues second game saw Alicia Callaghan back in the circle delivering a stellar performance, giving up three hits in five innings for one run, which was unearned. Second-year outfielder Rebecca Burt drew a start in centre field for the first time this season, and had three hits, and scored three runs. First basemen, Karen Nishi stayed hot with another double and RBI in the 9-1 victory.

U of T improves to 8-2 on the season and currently sits tied for second place in the OIWFA with the McMaster Marauders (8-1), behind the Western Mustangs (11-0).

The Varsity Blues are back in action Tuesday night when they host the Ryerson Rams at Thomson Park. Game times are 7 and 9 p.m.
