University of Toronto Varsity Blues football player DJ Sackey was taken 13th overall by the Toronto Argonauts in the 2016 CFL Draft on Tuesday night.
Â
As a 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman, Sackey (Mississauga) dressed and started all eight games for the past two seasons and has played on both sides of the ball.Â
Former U of T wide receiver Llevi Noel later joined Sackey as a new Argo. Noel was chosen 31st overall by Toronto.
The duo's selection marks the fifth time in the past six seasons that a Varsity Blues player has been selected in the Canadian draft. Defensive back Hugo Lopez was drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos (14th overall) in 2011, while linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza was taken in the sixth round in 2012. Four Varsity Blues in Aaron Milton, Alex Pierzchalski, Aaron Wheaton and Christopher Johnson were drafted in 2014, while Kevin Bradfield was selected 55th overall in the 2015 draft.Â
Noel was named a CIS second team all-Canadian in 2014. A native of Toronto, Noel led all players in the OUA and CIS with 8.2 receptions and 126.3 yards per game, catching 49 passes for 758 yards – in both of these categories, he ranked second in the province having played in only 6-of-8 games.
Â
He had four games of 100+ yards, including a career-high 200 yards versus the Carleton Ravens, and made four touchdown receptions this season.
Â
Noel helped the Blues offence top the U of T single-season record for highest net offence (3,165 – 1981), ending 2014 with 3,772 yards. Toronto also broke team single-season passing records for most attempts (330), completions (205) and highest completion percentage (62.1%), all topping marks set in 1981.
