Box Score Photo GalleryThe University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's volleyball team dropped a narrow 3-1 (23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25) decision to the Waterloo Warriors as their 2015-16 season came to a close in OUA quarter-final action on Saturday evening (Feb. 27) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
Third-year right side hitter Will Colucci led the Blues with 17 points and 10 digs, while fifth-year left Stefan Ristic notched 12 points and 10 digs on the night.
Fifth-year setter Aleksa Miladinovic tallied 41 assists, four kills, two aces, one block and eight digs, while sophomore Thomas Meier had seven kills and five digs.
In his final game as a Varsity Blue, Nate Virgo notched six kills, once ace and three digs.
The first set went back and forth with no team holding more than a three-point lead. With the Warriors up 16-15 at the break, Waterloo gained momentum after two aces from Aidan Simone lifted them to a 23-20 advantage, but the Blues battled back to bring it within one (24-23). A final kill from Jordan McConkey sealed the first, 25-23, in favour of the Warriors.
It was another see-saw battle in the second, with Waterloo building another narrow 16-15 lead at the technical timeout. The Warriors ended the set on a 9-5 run to take the 2-0 match lead, 25-20.
Close in the early goings of the third, the Blues pulled away and led 16-12 at the break. The Warriors battled back however and evened the set at 22-22, but a thrilling final kill from Thomas Meier kept U of T alive with a 25-22 third set victory.
The fourth set followed suit but Waterloo was able to pull away to lead 16-12 at the technical timeout. Toronto rallied to bring it within two (17-19) and came oh so close with a couple of final kills from Ristic, but the Warriors sealed the victory with a 25-23 fourth set win.
Simone led all players with 21 points for the Warriors, while Braden Coke had 18 points on a team-high 15 kills. Warriors setter Gibson Graham tallied 54 assists and 10 digs in the win.
