JOHNSON, BLUES SINK LAKERS

Box Score Fifth-year forward Devin Johnson notched a game-high 25 points in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team to an 86-74 victory over the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday night (Nov. 19) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

Johnson went 10-for-21 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw line, while adding six rebounds and one block on the night.

Second-year forward Daniel Johansson recorded 13 points and five boards, with fourth-year guard Reilly Reid also adding 13 points, three assists and two steals.

Third-year guard Sage Usher tallied 11 points, four boards, four assists and three steals in the win.

Johnson and Johansson paced the Blues through the first quarter as they held a 25-13 advantage after 10 minutes. The Lakers rallied and gained the lead with just under three minutes to go in the half, but back-to-back baskets from Johnson put the Blues up 40-35 at halftime.

The third quarter proved to be a back-and-forth battle with the Blues carrying a 64-56 advantage into the final frame. The Lakers looked to gain momentum in the fourth, but after a Toronto timeout, Ruttenberg and Usher hit two consecutive three-pointers to put the game away for good.

Jaaden Lewis led the Lakers with 21 points and five boards in the loss.

The Varsity Blues are back in action next Saturday, November 26 as they travel to Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., to take on the Algoma Thunderbirds. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. The Blues return home the following Wednesday, November 30 when they host the Windsor Lancers at Golding Centre.
