BLUES BLANK LIONS ON OVA DAY

Box Score The No. 3 nationally ranked Varsity Blues women's volleyball team defeated the York Lions 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-23) in U of T's third annual OVA Day on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 13) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
 
The Varsity Blues honoured U of T alumni and 2016 beach volleyball Olympians Josh Binstock, Heather Bansley and Kristina Valjas in a special post-game ceremony in the Kimel Family Field House.
 
Second-year right side hitter Alina Dormann led all players with 18 points on 16 kills and two blocks, while adding 12 digs on the day.
 
Fellow sophomore Anna Licht tallied 11 points on seven kills and four blocks, while third-year left side hitter Anna Feore had 10 points on nine kills and one block, and led all players with 18 digs.
 
Fifth-year setter Madelyn Mandryk recorded 32 assists and eight digs, with libero Asli Ersozoglu notching 10 digs in the win.
 
The first set was a back-and-forth battle with York getting out to an 11-7 advantage thanks to back-to-back aces from Melissa Smillie. The Blues rallied though and trailed 16-15 at the technical timeout.  From there, the two teams traded points until back-to-back kills from Dormann ended the set, 25-23, in favour of the Blues.
   
The second frame was just as close to start but the Blues pulled away to take a 16-11 advantage at the technical timeout. The Lions brought the game within four (23-19) but U of T took a 2-0 lead with a final kill from Dormann, 25-19.
   
York got out to a 4-0 lead in the third set but the Blues battled back and a big kill from Anna Licht evened the set at 7-7. Toronto was up 16-14 at the technical timeout. Tied at 23-23, the Blues closed out the match with a final kill from Feore to seal their fifth straight victory.
 
Sarah Williams led the Lions with 13 points on 10 digs, two aces and one block in the loss.
 
The Varsity Blues return to action on Friday, November 25 when they travel down the street to take on the Ryerson Rams. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
