Thursday (Oct. 6) night in Guelph, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues fastpitch team secured third place in the OIWFA picking up 3-2 and 11-2 wins over the Gryphons as teams prepare for the upcoming OIWFA championships next weekend.
Third-year pitcher Taisley Isaac started Game 1 for the Blues pitching a full seven innings giving up just two hits and one earned run while striking out seven. The tight contest came down to the wire where three-time OIWFA all-star Nicole Knudsen was able to drive in the winning run with a crucial RBI double scoring outfielder Rebecca Burt, handing the Blues the one-run victory.
Toronto followed that up with a dominant Game 2 as second-year Annie Vlahiotis pitched a strong five innings giving up zero earned runs while striking out four. At the plate leadoff hitter Alika Kingsbury collected two hits while scoring twice, Shelby Reid earned two RBI, and Kylie O'Donnell and Karen Nishi scored twice each.
The Varsity Blues now sit at 15-7 clinching third in the OIWFA standings. As the rest of the league concludes regular season play this weekend U of T will be preparing to better their bronze medal performance from a year ago at the OIWFA championship. This years championship tournament begins next Friday, October 14 in Innerkip, Ontario with the Blues first opponent still yet to be determined.
