BLUES GO 1-1 WITH MARAUDERS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team split their doubleheader with the McMaster Marauders on Sunday, September 27 in Hamilton, Ont.

The Blues dropped Game 1, 12-11, but bounced back with a 12-6 win in Game 2.

In the first game of the day, both offences were churning out runs as U of T collected 16 hits while the Marauders earned 10. First-year infielder Gabriel Nakonechny (Toronto) led the charge for the Varsity Blues going 4-for-6 at the plate including a big triple while outfielder Bradley Bedford (Burlington, Ont.) produced four RBIs to lead the team in scoring.

However, a pair of three RBI performances from McMaster's Keith Woodcock and Andy Falcon-Gonzalez allowed the Marauders to sneak out with the one run victory late in the game.

As the second game began the bats for the Varsity Blues continued to shine but it would be veteran Andrew Mannone (Toronto) leading the way with a 2-for-5, three RBI day. Add in stellar work on the base paths from U of T speeding away with 10 stolen bases, highlighted by first-year infielder Anthony Spignesi's (Toronto) team leading three stolen bases, and the Varsity Blues showcased an offence built for success.

Pitcher David Pham (Toronto) would earn the complete game in the shortened contest, giving up five earned runs in seven innings with four strikeouts.

The Varsity Blues return to action this Wednesday, September 30 as they host the Ryerson Rams at Dan Lang Field.
