The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fastpitch team made the trek to Sydenham, Ontario to play against the Queen's Gaels on Sunday, September 20.
In a gorgeous setting down by Sydenham Point, the Blues were able to scratch out a tie in the early game. Pitcher Taisley Isaac was excellent in the circle, giving up just one run before giving way to Alicia Callaghan to finish the game, which went into extra innings. On offence, the Blues were led by second baseman Alika Kingsbury, who scored twice, and drove in a run, as well as athlete of the week, Nicole Knudsen, three hits and two runs driven in during the 3-3 tie.
The second game saw Renee Ridout get the start and fight through a tough three innings in the pitching circle. She was able to keep Queen's offence down long enough to allow the bats to wake up for Toronto. Again led by the top of the lineup, Alika Kingsbury and Nicole Knudsen scored four runs, and drove in four between them. Kylie O'Donnell added a run driven in, as did Karen Nishi and Danielle Ridout. Alicia Callaghan finished the game out with two scoreless innings of pitching, which saw the Blues rack up a 10-2 victory.
This runs the Blues record to 4-1-1 on the season, with a big week of games ahead. The squad have six games this coming weekend with Guelph in town Friday night at Dieppe Park (5pm first pitch). Western and Windsor will also be in town Saturday (2pm/4pm) and Sunday (11am/1pm).
