Seven University of Toronto Varsity Blues football alumni are set to begin another season, vying for a coveted roster spot as the 2015 Canadian Football League (CFL) training camps get underway this week.
Rookies report on May 27 for medicals and practice, with veterans set to join them on the field, May 31.
The most recent addition to the CFL is 2013 CIS all-Canadian returner
Kevin Bradfield. The Toronto native became the first Varsity Blue to be drafted by the Toronto Argonauts since Eric Shilts in 1998. Bradfield was chosen 55th overall this year, marking the fourth time in the past five seasons that a U of T player has gone in the CFL draft.
2013 OUA all-star receiver
Alex Pierzchalski of London, Ont., returns for his second season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The 18th overall pick in last year's draft played four seasons with the Blues (2010-13), amassing 149 receptions for 1,617 and 13 TD's. Pierzchalski played in 13 regular season games with Saskatchewan in 2014, listed as a backup receiver while also playing on special teams.
Similarly, running back
Aaron Milton is back for his second season with the Edmonton Eskimos. Milton totalled 243 carries for 1,374 yards and five touchdowns as a Varsity Blue. In his rookie season, he tied the U of T record for longest rush with a 105-yard rushing touchdown versus the then No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees. After being selected 15th overall in the 2014 draft, the Whitby, Ont., native dressed for three games as a reserve fullback with the Eskimos.
2014 graduate
Everton Williams will join former Blues teammate
Christopher Johnson in Hamilton for the Ti-Cats training camp. A 6-foot-6, 285-pound defensive lineman, Williams was signed by the Ti-Cats as a free agent last month. He played 27 games in four seasons as a Varsity Blue, registering 19 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble in 2014.
Johnson joined the Ti-Cats after being selected in the fifth round (44th overall) in the 2014 draft. He played one game last season, notching two special team tackles, and spent the large part of the season on Hamilton's practice roster.
Offensive lineman
Aaron Wheaton looks to crack the Ottawa Redblacks roster this week. The native of Ajax was added to Ottawa's roster in January following a successful five-year career on Toronto's O-Line. Wheaton helped U of T top the school's single-season record for highest net offence (3,165 – 1981), ending 2014 with 3,772 yards.
He will be joined in Ottawa by
Hugo Lopez, a teammate of Wheaton's in 2010. Lopez played one season with the Varsity Blues (2010) before being chosen 14th overall by the Edmonton Eskimos in the 2011 draft. The defensive back played two games with the Redblacks last season, after a two-year career with Edmonton.
The Varsity Blues football team opens their 154th season on Sunday, August 30 as they host the McMaster Marauders at Varsity Centre. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. Click
