Box Score In a rematch of last season's OUA final, the No. 5 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team blanked the Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-16) on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 15) at Goldring Centre.
With the win, the OUA defending champions improve to 6-0 and remain atop the East division, while the Gee-Gees drop to 4-4 and sit third.
First-year right side hitter Alina Dormann led all players with 12 kills, three aces, two blocks and four digs, while fourth-year left side hitter Caleigh Cruickshank had seven kills, a game-high five aces, one block and three digs on the day.
Sophomore standout Anna Feore added eight kills, five digs and three aces, with veteran middle Bojana Radan adding seven kills, two blocks, one ace and five digs.
Libero Denise Wooding recorded a game-high 10 digs, with third-year setter Erin Jacobs tallying 22 assists and one ace in the victory.
The Blues got out to a 10-5 lead in the first set and a great dig from Wooding led to a Dormann kill to give Toronto the 16-10 lead at the technical timeout. Some stellar serving from Cruickshank and a final kill from Feore led a 9-2 run to give the Blues the 25-12 victory.
Toronto continued to roll in the second set with a nice ace from Radan putting the Blues up 8-3 in the early goings. Radan kept the energy up and a nice kill gave U of T a 16-10 advantage at the break. Dormann added a few kills to spark a 9-4 run to win it 25-14.
Ottawa got out to a 5-1 lead in the third set, but the Blues rallied back to even the score at 10-10 and took a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. Some great work from Tessa Davis and a final kill from Dormann sealed the match, 25-16, for the Blues.
Alix Durivage led the Gee-Gees with five kills, with Kira Tome notching 16 assists and seven digs in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Friday, November 20 as they host the Nipissing Lakers at Goldring Centre. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
